New age journalism receives reinforcement. It is an amazing and unique mobile news service based on geo-location.

We present you NewsByMe app and our interview with their President and CEO Pason Gaddis.

Q: What is NewsByMe?

A: NewsByMe is a global, crowd-sourced, mobile service that lets everyday people collect and disseminate news in innovative ways based on Geo-Location. NewsByMe is the only news service built from the ground up as a mobile news platform to provide street-level news and events to consumers.

Q: Is it a local or worldwide project?

A: Global, it works anywhere. Our overall market size is the world (1.75 billion smartphones). Our early stage addressable market is the U.S. with 164 million smartphones expected to grow to 220 million by 2018. And, our initial trial and test area is Southwest Florida with 613,600 smartphones.

Q: You have an interesting name. Tell us more about it.

A: NewByMe is news by me (created and disseminated by me) and news by me (news happening nearby me). The app has a “Nearby” feed that can be adjusted by the user from 1 to 50 miles.

Q: What makes you stand out from other news apps?

A: Several things make this app standout. First, it was developed strictly for mobile. It was not made for an online component or a printing press. Secondly, Geo-location gives the app reliability. For example, if you wanted to comment or post about a world event, say Occupy Wall Street, you could do that on Twitter or Facebook and no one would know if you were actually there or not. With NewsByMe your post is tied to your geo-location. So, readers know if you are actually there. Readers tend to give more credence to an eyewitness report rather than one from a thousand miles away. The app also allows you to follow news in a specific area, say, your child’s school, your parents home, your former hometown. Just drop a beacon on that location, adjust the radius to fit your needs and you can instantly see the news where you want to see it.

To keep this short, I’ll give you just one more example. All news posts are archived (the original post is removed approximately 24 hours after the last action is taken on the report: a push, a share, or just the post itself) and can be searched at any time. You can search keywords in any geographical area you choose.

OK, one more. On social media, your viewing audience is limited to your friends, followers or trends. With NewsByMe, your audience is the world.

Really, this is the last one. NewsByMe was developed by experienced news professionals who found some really smart engineers and then took the best from both worlds to create this unique app.

Q: How did you come up with the idea to create this innovative project?

A: We we’re in the middle of a breaking news event in a public area where there was a hostage situation. No media was reporting on it for over an hour and when they got there, no one could get inside but yet there were witnesses there who could have captured it an reported on the scene an informed people in that area what was going on.

Q: Do you see NewsByMe in the service of citizen journalism?

A: NewByMe is citizen journalism in its purest form. After all, it’s community members, not professional journalists, who spot a news event first.

Q: What are your hopes regarding NewsByMe?

A: We want NewsByMe to make a difference. We want citizen journalists to help find that missing child, record a grassroots problem that means a lot to a small group but is too minor for mainstream media, and we want people to really get to know their communities.

Q: Citizen journalism in the future - your view.

A: It’s here now. NewsByMe is just the utility that facilitates it.
