Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister, Chalerm Yoobamrung, has vowed to remove mafia groups from operating within the nation’s tourism industry within 90 days.
Chalerm met with senior officials from the Tourism and Sports Ministry yesterday, as well as governors of popular tourist destinations, including Phuket, Ayutthaya, Nakhon Ratchasima, Khon Kaen, Chiang Mai, Ubon Ratchathani, Sukhothai, Tak and Kanchanaburi at the Royal Thai Police headquarters in Bangkok. He concluded that the mafia-controlled groups, which operate in many of Thailand’s popular tourist hotspots, pose a great danger to the future of the industry.
