Apple’s iPhone 5 costs just US$0.41 to charge per year in the US according an energy efficiency company study. The Opower study in the US notes that smartphones and tablets require significantly less energy than other consumer electronics such as laptops, desktops, TVs or game consoles, but the sheer number of smartphones significantly increases their global energy impact.
